The courtyard takes her breath away. Navy shutters. Terracotta roof tiles. Vines climbing up the walls. Blossoms and bougainvillea. She could stay here all day. Perhaps she will, she thinks with a hint of impatience. Her hosts are taking an awfully long time to photocopy her passport. Her phone flashes. Dominic…again! She’s never known her husband to be this needy. He texts her every hour. He details each meal they eat. Every activity they do. He sends photos too!

Slow footsteps. Alicia reappears. This woman must be eighty but she’s distinctly punk rock. Large sunglasses. Black leather dress with square gold buttons. Metallic sandals. Her hair is jet black, straight from a bottle, immovable thanks to the mighty power of hairspray.

“It’s gorgeous here,” Daphne gushes.

Her husband, Eduardo, appears. He’s Glenn Miller Orchestra to Alicia’s punk rock. Long-sleeved white shirt, chinos. He has a pockmarked face, a bushy mustache.

“Please. Follow us,” Eduardo says, gesturing.

Eduardo and Alicia walk slowly, holding hands. They laugh gently. On the way to her room, they show her their private garden. Eduardo points out a hummingbird. Alicia teaches her the names of plants. Bromeliads. Dahlia. Agave.

Her phone buzzes again. Dominic. It’s been four minutes.
